Can Exercise Prevent Cancer?

Oeventy years ago, two Minnesota physicians noticed that most

of their patients who developed cancer led sedentary lives. They

also noticed that patients who were farmers rarely developed cancer.

They speculated that hard work and physical activity might

prevent cancer. They compared cancer rates among various occupations.

As they expected, cancer rates decreased as physical

activity increased.

More recent research has supported the idea that exercising

regularly can prevent cancer. A study of thirteen thousand people conducted by the Institute for Aerobics Research in Dallas used the treadmill test to measure fitness levels and then track cancer rates over eight years. They found that the men who were least fit had

more than four times the overall cancer rates than the most fit

men. The least fit women had sixteen times higher death rates due to cancer than the most fit women.

Many studies show that exercising decreases risks of colon

cancer, breast cancer, and possibly prostate cancer. Cancer of

the colon is the second leading cause of death (next to lung

cancer) in the United States. Fifty thousand Americans die each
